Hostel Dresden FAQ
Hostel Dresden FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Facilities

Is your hostel accessible for people with disabilities?

No, not really. We do not have a lift. Our rooms are upstairs (first and second floor). We would like to change that, but the structure of the building doesn’t allow changes. If you have any questions regarding accessibility, please let us know at info@mondpalast.de.

Do you have a laundry service?

No, but the laundromat “Waschmeister” is located just across the street.

Do you have hair dryers?

Yes, you will find a hair dryer in most of our bathrooms. Or you can just ask us at reception and we’ll lend you a personal one for a 5€ deposit.

Are towels provided?

Towels are included in our private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. If you have booked a shared room or a private room without a private bathroom, you can either bring your own towels or hire some on site for a small fee of €3.

Can I smoke in the hostel?

Our whole hostel is a non-smoking area. Smoking is not allowed inside the hostel.

Do you have a lift/elevator?

No, our building is quite old, so we do not have a lift. If you need help with your luggage our staff are happy to help you carry your things upstairs

Do you have lockers?

Yes, there are lockers in every shared room. You should use your own padlock or you can borrow one at the reception with a 5€ deposit. If you don't need the padlock after your stay, we will also take it back from you and we will return the deposit to you.

Can we borrow bicycles?

Yes. We believe bicycles are the perfect way to explore Dresden. We have a number of street bikes available for rent from 10€ for the whole day or 5€ for 3 hours. We also have two E-Bikes available for 13€ (each). We require a deposit for the bikes, either in the form of a passport or valid ID-card. Alternatively we can reserve 200€ on your credit card.

Do you have WiFi?

Yes, WiFi is free and accessible in the whole building. We offer an ultra fast 1GBit connection.

Can I cook my own food in your hostel?

Yes, we do have a fully equipped guest kitchen, which you may use at any time. It is equipped with an oven, microwave, kettle, toaster etc., as well as with pots and pans, plates and cutlery. You can store your food in the fridge or in a separate basket. Please make sure to label your food with your name and the date you are leaving. Stickers and pens can be found in the corner next to the oven.

Can I use the showers if I’m not staying at the hostel?

Yes, we do however take a 5,00€ fee for this service.

Location

Is it quiet at night?

The hostel is located in "Neustadt", the so called scene district of Dresden. It is surrounded by many pubs, bars, restaurants and there are some clubs in our neighbourhood. It is not the most quiet neighbourhood for sure. In general it will be louder in summer months and on holidays or weekend, as people will sit in the streets even at night and drink/ talk. In the colder months its much more quiet on the streets and people sit in bars more. We ask our in house guests to reduce their volume after 10 pm.

Can I use my own sleeping bag or bed linens?

No, unfortunately not. There are two reasons for this – firstly, we make all beds in advance, so it would be unnecessary in any case. Secondly, we want to avoid the risk that guests unknowingly bring bed bugs from other hostels in their bed linens.

Is there parking at the hostel?

We do not have our own parking spaces, so if you come by car you can park it on the streets nearby the hostel. Parking situation may differ depending on day and time of the day. However, there are two car parks, one at Bautzner Str./ Rothenburger Str. (about 5 minutes walking distance) and one at Kamenzer Str. (about 2 minutes walking distance). Parking on the street costs 2,40€ per hour parking in nearby parking facilities costs 7.50€ per day. Please read our parking guide.

Bookings

Can I get a bed without an advance booking?

Of course, we take spontaneous reservations at the reception, with no extra charges. However, in the summer months and on weekends we are often very full, so it is advisable to book in advance.

Can I extend my stay after arrival?

Of course, subject to availability. However, please discuss this with our receptionists – this way we can make sure you stay in the same room if possible, and you can avoid additional fees. Don’t book another night via Booking.com or Hostelworld – this makes it difficult for us and more expensive for you.

How can I cancel my booking?

It depends how you made your reservation. If you booked through an external web service, e.g. Booking.com, Hostelworld, then you should also cancel through this web page.

If you booked directly with us, then you should also cancel directly with us. Thats easy: Just send us a message: info@mondpalast.de. We will confirm your cancellation via e-mail, then your reservation will be cancelled definitely.

Can I stay at your hostel if I’m under 18?

Yes, you can. However we require a signed permission slip from your parent or guardian and a photocopy of their ID. Please send us an email prior to your arrival and we will send you a permission slip template. If you do not have a permission slip we will not check you in.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, if you cancel in time. You can cancel up to 48 hours before arrival without any additional cost. After this period the full amount is due as a cancellation fee.

This applies only for those rooms or beds, which we can not rent to other guests. So it’s advisable to let us know your cancellation as early as possible, even if it is too late for a free cancellation. This will increase the chance that we can sell your beds to someone else and you don't have to pay for it.

Please be aware that non-refundable bookings are non-refundable. We cannot provide a refund under any circumstances in these cases. Please consider this before booking.

Why can’t I stay for just one night on the weekend?

On weekends in the summer season we usually require a general minimum stay of two nights. Depending on the occupancy on the days before or after, it may be possible that we also allow overnight stays on the weekend for one night only. In addition, a few days before the start of the weekend, we also release the remaining available rooms for overnight stays for only one night.

On special days (e.g; Eastern, Pentecost, Ascension Day, Christmas, New Years Eve etc.) we may have a minimum stay of 3 nights or more.

If you are not sure whether a minimum stay is set or not, send us message to info@mondpalast.de.

Do we take volunteers?

Yes, We take volunteers. Ideally you should want to stay for at least a month. Your tasks will be looking after guests, shopping, and keeping the common area clean and tidy. We offer free accommodation in return. Please contact us about opportunities at backoffice@mondpalast.de.

Our receptionists should live in Dresden and be able to legally work in Germany. We are looking exclusively for colleagues who want to work with us long term, because our reception work is more fun with practice and experience.

Good English and German skills are required for reception. Further language skills and relevant experience is a plus. Cleaners and night shift workers need good English skills, German is not necessary but a big plus!

Can I buy a voucher?

Yes, we sell vouchers for overnight stays. Please send us an email at backoffice@mondpalast.de.

How can I reach Saxon Switzerland and the Bastei Bridge?

It is very easy and convenient. There is a train (S1, direction “Schöna” or “Bad Schandau”) every half an hour from the “Bischofsplatz Station” or from the “Neustadt Train Station”. We've also made a tour for you. You can find it here.

Both stations are 10 minutes walking distance from the Hostel.

How do I reach the hostel?

The closest train station is "Dresden-Neustadt", all trains stop here from and to Leipzig/Frankfurt and Görlitz, as well as the S-Bahn. It's about a 15-20 min walking distance there.

The main train station "Dresden-Hauptbahnhof" is about 30 min away. It would be best to catch the tram line 7 or 8, they take 15-18 min and you will have a short distance to walk.

Check for detailed directions here.

Do you offer breakfast?

We offer a breakfast buffet daily from 7:30 to 12:00. It costs 10€, incl. unlimited tea and coffee, bread rolls and toast, butter and margarine, several kinds of jam, chocolate spread, honey, cereals and milk, a large selection of cheese, yoghurt, self-made spreads, juices, boiled eggs, pancakes and home-made vegan cakes.

Can I get to know people in the hostel?

Yes! We think it is very important to make it easy to get in touch with your fellow travellers. Thats why we organise events regularly to make it easier for you to put your phone in your pocket and to get to know the other guests and even make new friends.

Can you wake me up in the morning?

No, we do not offer this service.

Can I request a particular bunk bed?

We do not have assigned beds, so you can choose any free bed on arrival by hanging the sign you receive at check in on the bed. This works on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If necessary, you can reserve an upper or lower bed for 3.50€. Please let us know before arrival. This service is subject to availability.

What are the opening times for the reception?

24 hours a day, every day in the year. Our reception is always open!

Can I drink my own alcohol in the hostel?

Of course. The only area where you cannot drink your own alcohol is in our bar – but we’re happy to offer you some local beers!

Please consider other guests and act responsibly while drinking.

Is Dresden safe?

Generally yes. As in every touristy city, there are pickpockets (Christmas Markets, New Town and Old Town). You should also avoid drunken people in big groups. Sometimes they party too much. We also do not recommend to walk through parks alone during night time and to leave your personal stuff unattended in bars/clubs or in the city.

What can I do in Dresden?

There are plenty of things to do in Dresden. We have a huge bar scene, good parties and concerts, a beautiful baroque Old Town, a stunning National Park near by and beautiful castles and fortresses, but also world famous museums. You can go shopping, climbing and hiking and much more!

Please ask our experts at reception for a personal recommendation. We will try to work out some proposals according to your interests or wishes

How much does a tram ticket cost?

A single tram ticket is 3,00€. However, you can purchase a 4-Journey ticket for 10,60€ (2,65€ per trip) or a day pass for 8,00€. Small group passes (up to 5 people) cost 20,20€.
